MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has introduced its new eco-friendly, biodegradable paper-based SIM cards, a step aligned with the company’s Project Zero initiative, which targets achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

According to the company, this innovation represents effort towards sustainability, as the biodegradable SIM cards offer a greener alternative by reducing waste and supporting the circular economy throughout their lifecycle.

The transition from traditional plastic-based SIM cards is a crucial move in addressing plastic pollution while promoting environmentally responsible practices. MTN emphasised that this change is part of its broader commitment to eco-conscious operations, which are integral to its Project Zero goals.

This announcement closely follows a statement from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which revealed plans to introduce a revised corporate governance code aimed at aligning the telecom sector with global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

By gradually phasing out plastic-based SIM cards, MTN is making a tangible contribution to the fight against plastic waste, reinforcing its dedication to sustainability. The company further highlighted that the new biodegradable SIM cards are sourced from a local supplier, underlining its commitment to fostering local economic growth and supporting local businesses.

When compared to traditional Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic SIM cards, the 100% biodegradable paper-based SIM cards offer several advantages. These eco-friendly alternatives naturally break down and are fully recyclable, significantly reducing waste and pollution.

According to MTN, the production and disposal processes of these biodegradable SIMs also result in a lower carbon footprint; this shift helps eliminate many of the issues associated with plastic SIM cards, such as limited recycling options, the accumulation of waste in landfills, and the environmental harm caused by incineration.

Tobe Okigbo, MTN’s chief corporate services and sustainability officer, described the initiative as part of the company’s ongoing pledge to environmental responsibility. “Our eco-friendly SIM cards reflect our continuous efforts to integrate sustainability into our business operations and contribute positively to the environment. We are proud to support local vendors and encourage more eco-conscious decisions among our customers,” he said.

According to Adekemi Adisa, General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value, the initiative reflects a strong focus on both people and the environment. She noted, “Our dedication to sustainability stems from a desire to enhance the well-being of individuals and protect the planet. The introduction of these recyclable SIM cards represents a step toward a more environmentally friendly future, and we encourage our customers to join us in reducing waste and adopting greener choices.”
